CHAPTER EIGHT

The Show Goes On

Alex pulled the sheet pan from the oven. Tim was making Devonshire cream beside her in the Kitchen Aid stand mixer. The day was young and they were the only two people already in this morning. After a phone call Monday night, Tim had met her early, to discuss catering jobs and the work load at the tea room.

“Scones are done. I’m going to put these pans on the cooling rack and get started early on Martha’s cake. Thanks so much for agreeing to help me out with this Tim. I want you to show Lillie just how much you know about the food here. You’re an awesome cook! She needs to realize that you are more than just a dishwasher. You’ve helped me out countless times.”

Tim smiled and ducked his head down. “She’s never seen me help you. We’ve always come in early or stayed late after everyone has left for the day. Or I’ve helped you outside of here on your catering jobs. It’ll be nice to do something different for a change. I can handle both while you’re gone.” He turned to stare at Alex. “How long are you going to be gone?”

“I don’t know.” She looked rather perplexed with the answer. “I’ll have to come back before Lillie goes on vacation though. No more than ten days. She’ll want me back before she leaves for Maine, to go and visit her grandbabies.”

“Just promise me that you’ll have fun and give him a chance. I’ve not seen you this happy in…ever.”

“I’ll try, Tim. I’ve never had something like this happen to me. I don’t believe in coincidences. I met him for a reason. God has given me a peace over this that I can’t articulate.”

“He’s not Sam. Just remember that.”

Alex laughed, “My mother told me the same thing.”

“She’s right. We both are.” He smiled again.

“Yes, you are. Let’s get this cake finished before the crew gets here. We can put the layers in the cooler and you can frost the three of them the day before. You’ll already have lemon curd made up anyway. It’s back on the menu for June.”

Lillie was indeed surprised to find Tim in the kitchen, wearing a bright yellow Williams-Sonoma apron, with Alex, when she arrived that morning. After a long talk, she agreed to let Tim be more creative for the tea room.

At the height of lunch rush, the UPS man showed up to deliver a package for Alex. Lillie sat the box aside, after signing for it, to give to Alex, as soon as she could. It was past three that afternoon when Tim noticed the box under the cash register. He and Alex had taken a plate out front to have their lunch.

“Alex, this box has your name on it.” He handed the brown box to her.

Lillie felt her face go red with shame. “Alex, I’m sorry. We were busy and then I just forgot about it, completely.”

Alex smiled and patted Lillie’s shoulder. “It’s okay. It’s probably just those small chocolate transfer sheets I ordered.
